Diabetes is a chronic disease that can not be cured but can be treated and controlled. It is caused by a lack or lack of use of a hormone called insulin .
Insulin is produced by the pancreas . It allows glucose(sugar) to enter the body’s cells for use as a source of energy. In a non-diabetic person, insulin performs well and cells have the energy they need to function.
When it lacks insulin or it can not perform well, as in diabetes, glucose can not be used as a fuel to the cells. It accumulates in the blood and causes an increase in the sugar level ( hyperglycemia ).
Over time, high levels of sugar in the blood cause some complications , especially in the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels.
There are different types of diabetes either prediabetes to diabetes type 1 to type 2 , the pregnancy diabetes and other rarer kinds .
